>From the BBC Online:

Stars donate songs for Omagh album

Ash, U2 and Sinead O'Connor are among the stars donating tracks to an
album in aid of an appeal fund set up to help victims of the Omagh bomb.

The Divine Comedy and the Corrs will also appear on the CD and
organisers are in talks with Boyzone as well.
A number of songs are being specially recorded for the compiliation
album which is scheduled for a November release and looks set to become
one of the biggest sellers at Christmas.

>From Entertainment Weekly:

SONG OF SALMAN

Now that the Iranian government has lifted its long-standing death
threat (fatwa) against Salman Rushdie, we can expect the _Satanic
Verses_ scribe to get out there and beat the drum for his new novel
...perhaps literally. Holt's marketing department is trying to sell
Rushdie agent Andrew Wylie on a joint spring tour with U2, with
whom the author spent serious face time researching _The
Ground Beneath Her Feet_, a rock & roll update of the Orpheus
and Eurydice story (even popping up on stage, though not singing,
during a 1993 concert). "He has a relationship with Bono, so I
don't think it's inconceivable," says a Holt spokeswoman. Wylie
was en route to the Frankfurt Book Fair and could not be
reached, but he has reportedly pooh-poohed the idea in favor
of promotional spots with MTV or VH1. "Next year is the 10-year
anniversary of the fatwa, so there's a lot to tie into that,"
enthuses the spokeswoman. Maybe a nice Ayatollah t-shirt?

There was just a piece on CNN's Headline News about Bono,
Mel Gibson, and The Million Dollar Hotel.
------------
More from Pierluigi on the Zucchero "Blue" single:

In an interview with Italian Corriere Della Sera, Zucchero said the
title Blu/Blue for his new single was decided by Bono, who didn't
know anyway Blu is also Zucchero's child name (8 months old).
In Paris (during soccer World Cup, in July) Bono gave Zucchero
the final lyrics for the song. Zucchero had explained Bono his
idea of a track full of hope, of rainy skies changing to blue the
day after. Italian version (written by Pasquale Panella, a well
known lyricist in Italy) has a more powerful erotic meaning, it's
more sensual. The photo for the Blu/Blue single cover was taken
by Anton Corbijn.

>From JamTV:

U2 Begin Preliminary Work on "Pop" Follow-up

Let's face it, every day is a vacation for U2. So, what difference
does it make whether they spend it on the bleach-white beaches of
some Caribbean island, or in a recording studio jamming with
legendary producers/musicians Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. It's
all good.

That said, U2 have been unofficially reunited with the producing
team that helped mold the sound on what are arguably the pop
quartet's best albums (1984's The Unforgettable Fire, 1987's The
Joshua Tree and 1991's Achtung Baby) in a Dublin, Ireland,
studio. According to a source close to the project, no deal is in
place between the band and producers, but both sides of the
equation began "working on ideas" last week, and "they'll probably
get to the record-making parts next year."

The current session follows the Dublin video shoot for the
single "Sweetest Thing," which will appear on The Best of
1980-1990, due out November 3.

>From Hot Press:

I'll Have Seen Everything When I See An Elephant Meet The Fly

So Says Chris Donovan as he takes up position ringside to watch
U2 shoot their new video.

Off all the bizarre sights the residents of Fitzwilliam Street have
been privy to, this is undoubtedly the first involving and Indian
elephant called Rani.

It's 9am on Sunday and while the rest of D4 is recovering from
the night before, U2 are shooting the video for their next single,
'The Sweetest Thing', which will be all over your TV screens this
weekend.

Along with our generously-trunked friend -- that's the elephant, not
Adam -- the cast of hundreds includes Jean Butler, Steve Collins,
Boyzone, the Artane Boys' Band and a moonlighting troupe of
Chippendales.

"It's like a cross between the Magical Mystery Tour and the Malteser
ad," is the verdict of one-looker who's dead chuffed having spent the
past five minutes chatting to Bono. Apart from the Garda at either
end of the road, there's little in the way of security with celebs and
fans mixing freely. A little too freely, perhaps, for Ronan Keating
who's averaging about ten autographs a minute.

"The video we shot today is completely different to that one we met
nine days ago to discuss," laughs Dreamchaser Productions' Ned
O'Hanlon. "The original plan was to do a simple studio shoot with
just the four members of the band and a two-wall set but, in typical
U2 fashion, that got scrapped with The Edge remarked, 'We out to
have Bono and Ali driving round Stephens Green in a horse-drawn
carriage.' Myself and Kevin Godley, the director are used to these
creative u-turns but one of the guys who was over with him was
horrified when somebody said, 'Yeah, and after that we can have
a herd of stampeding elephants!'"

The availability of elephants being what it is, the herd has dwindled
to just the one rock 'n' roll animal who apparently "bored" starts
getting stropping as tea-time approaches.

"As opposed to the band who've been their normal impeccably
behaved selves," O'Hanlon resumes. "Considering what might've
gone wrong, it's all gone very smoothly. We got into a rhythm of
shooting which, even allowing for elephantine tantrums, meant
we were able to get things wrapped up by the time the sun went
down."

As for the end product: "It looks like Bono and his mates made it
which is a nice contrast to the bigness of Pop. I have to live with
something for a while before I can judge it, but I think it's one of
the most successful videos they've done recently."
