lyric question..'the clanging what?"

I taped the "Do they know it's Christmas?" video and I want to know what
Bono and Sting and someone else (Paul Young?) are saying when they sing

"And the only bells that ring out
are the clanging ???????? "

sounds like 'shamballons' to me...shambaleers? It's probably perfectly
obvious to the rest of the world but I've never been able to figure it
out. Thanx.
