Possible reason why U2 put out the "Best of" album

A friend of mine who works in the record industry and I were having a chat
about a week ago when I happened to mention I had just gone out and spent
$28.00 on U2's Best of 1980-1990 CD. I said it seemed strange that they
would release a "Best of" Cd at this moment, and wondered what the deal was.
Well, he first asked me how many records U2 had made, and who they had been
signed under. I replied that they had done ten CDs to my knowledge and all
were under Island. Then he smiled and explained to me that bands usually
sign a contract for 7 or 11 albums with a company, and that when bands get
sick of their producer they usually just make a "Best Of" album to finish
off the contract. I laughed, thinking that U2 would never do something of
that nature, preferring to believe that their real intent in compiling this
new album was to expose new fans to their older stuff. But THEN I received
the digest today that said U2 was "dumping Island and signing with
Interscope". This sounds a little fishy to me. I really am grateful for the
b-side of the recent Best of, but I feel dissapointed. What do you guys
think?? ~asia~
