Hardcore U2 fans: walk, don't run to your local Tower store and buy
'U2 THE BEST OF 1980-1990' (Island, out now). Last Tuesday's release is
a
limited-edition two-disc set. Next Tuesday (11/10), a single disc
without
the bonus B-sides disc will hit stores. It's a nice perk to have the
B-sides collected on one CD, but if you consider yourself a U2 fan, you
shouldn't be surprised by anything on the disc. "Trash, Trampoline and
the
Party Girl," which morphed into the more recognizable "Party Girl"
(B-side
of "A Celebration"), from 1982 is the oldest song. Others include
"Endless
Deep," "Luminous Times (Hold On to Love)," "Three Sunrises" and a cover
of
Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot." The best-of disc has a re-recorded
version of "Sweetest Thing" that is inferior to the original in this
editor's opinion. Another minor gripe is the lack of chronological order
to the songs. Keep listening past the last listed track, "All I Want Is
You," for the unlisted yet stellar "October." For a band that's been
recording for almost 20 years (makes me feel old), a retrospective is
overdue and the limited-edition package is a nice reward. (Wildfeuer)
