its almost certainly software. i had this problem with an HP CDRW drive.
if you copy CDs - theres that 2 sec gap - really pissed me off because
i was making my own DJ mix CD - gaps are catastrophic! :)
anyway, FYI, the reason you are getting a 2sec gap is because the laser
is turning off after each track it burned, and then turning back on
for the next track. what you need is software that allows you to write
"disc at once".
this means that the laser writes the TOC, the tracks, any other data
(CDROM etc) all in one go.
note though - that using disc at once closes the disc and the session,
which means that you cant write to the disc again, ever.
this aint a big deal really - but just so you know. :)
as for recommendations, i think Adaptec's Easy CD Creator software
(think its v3.52 now?) takes some beating - damn good stuff.
