I think the new version is void of all but the most superficial emotion.
The old version had soul, and it retained a sense of the song's darker
side-- the ambivalence of which was reflected in Bono's vocal. (This is
*not* a happy go lucky love song, folks.) And, as Rob Okorn has already
pointed out, Bono doesn't attack any of the vocal lines. There's zero
passion here. In fact, I think it's almost noncommittal, like he's just
going through the motions and holding everything back. And the 'Do do do
dos' at the end kill whatever other merits the new version did have going
for it. A little cheesy? I'd say it's the musical equivalent of Velveeta
cheese.
