To Hit or Not To Hit...

Hi Wirelings,
for who's interested, this is my opinion about the Greatest Hits....
Almost every succeful band or artist has/had its greatest hits album (while
still in activity, so the first question to answer is: why U2 are/should be
different and shouldn't release a GH? Why so many fans wouldn't want a GH
album? I guess this is because
many feel such an album and moreover a deal for three GH is or would be only
for the money and maybe because most of U2 fans think that U2 records and
concerts are/were not only for the money but also for some ideals, believing
band's attitude was one thing with fans feelings, believing 90s masks were
also a different way to fight for those ideals...
As a fan I really don't need any GH and I even don't like those GH with one
or two new songs. I could appreciate maybe a cd also containing all the
first singles and all the b-sides, because this could be useful, it would
make more sense. But U2 releasing a GH doesn't make much sense to me: "hey
look, another band releasing a greatest hits album under Christmas!" It
doesn't make sense for Art or for Ideals and even for my collection :-(
I remember McGuinness, during the 1997 chat at MSN/U2 site, saying a GH
couldn't be on the way (maybe a box-set in the remote future) because U2
were alive and kicking...
The only reason I see is to earn money. Maybe it's true they lost too much
money in the last years, maybe they need money for all people usually
working for them? Or Polygram/Seagram is in need of fresh money and they're
so generous to help?
I can almost hear some friends of mine laughing: "a 50 deal for three GH
including the Hits from the 2010!!!"
Well, maybe they're planning to spend all this money for the refugees or
other people in need in the world... This could be a good reason for a three
GH deal ;-(
No other words to say at the moment... I'm still a U2 fan, probably I'll
send someone else to buy the GH for me... My irrational side will convince
myself we are still living and enjoing the PopMart era, a Greatest Hits is
such a PopMart object: it's surreal, isn't it? What about a cd-rom track
with all the karaoke versions of the U2 Greatest Hits??
I really hope someone from the band could say to us why they need money, why
they are going to make this deal and to release the GH; but it's ok also if
they say it's our band, it's our money, we do what we like, you're not
allowed
to ask.
Sorry for all this idealistic nonsense ;-(
