Personally, I feel the release of a 'Greatest Hits' compilation so
soon in U2's career would be an extremely odd, and out-of-character
act on their behalf.
I don't care what ppl have to say about the trivialities of true
appreciation or loyalty to ones fav group, there are certain
connotations tied to such projects that go completely against where
the band currently stands.
Effectively what it says is, the band, at this present time, is
unable, or unwilling to produce anything of the standard that has
remained throughout their career. A situation that each of the members
have said would see them break up rather than produce as unimaginative
product as a 'Greatest Hits' album.
U2 is still capable of producing new material just as impressive. They
also don't feel obliged to produce anything at the demands of studio
exec's, a fact that has been proven by their terrible track- record of
late albums.
So why the fuck are they doing this!
Think about it. Do you want U2 to enter the same market as Elton John
and Billy Joel? They'll be punctuating their career with a product
that says, "We're still good, check out all this cool shit we made
back in the 80's....remember that? Please come back and like
us...please..we'll be good, we promise.....more of the same if that's
what you want..."
I can only hope this is the project that Bono has apparently been
working on for quite some time, ie. a collection of studio outtakes
and rarities etc. (some of which were lost in a fire at Bono's place).
Such a project does NOT make such a dramatic statement about the
capabilities and position of the band at this time, but instead serves
as a reward for fans - acknowledging the fact they HAVE been around
for 20 years, but at the same time saying there is still plenty more
to come before any sort of package can be made to sum up their careers
in one CD.
Please don't do it guys.
We know you're better than this.
