I think that you're referring to the Penal Cross, which was worn by
Catholics in Ireland during the period when such fierce oppression (no
mass, no Gaelic allowed spoken, etc) forced the religious to go almost
underground. The cross has a very short horizontal section, partly in an
effort to disguise the 'cross-ness' of it.
Could anyone else with more info help us out here?
