You're better off holding off on a DVD player til mid to late 99 when
the new DVD players have the DVD Audio 1.0 spec which will eventually
supplant the CD standard, plus there are other compatability issues for
emerging DVD recordable technologies.
Panasonic will soon have DVD Video players and DVD-ROM's that play all
of the following:
DVD Audio 1.0, DVD Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, CD, CD-R, CD-RW
Current DVD players aren't compatable with 4 of the 5 DVD formats.

Besides that, the Dolby Digital Receivers on the market right now will
likely not be compatible with DVD Audio.
Unless you plan to buy 2 DVD players(DVD Video and DVD Audio), 2 Dolby
digital receivers, and 2 DVD-ROM's, best to wait a tad. Panasonic
should be first out of the gate and offer excellent specs.

You can still stock up on any U2 DVD titles, hopefully no defects.
