Yes, they did Karine. In 1986. I don't recall off the top of my
head where it was that Bono said it (I think *maybe* in the March
1987 Rolling Stone cover story, for one). But he said a couple of
times during the JT and R&H eras that 1986 was an incredibly bad year
for his marriage - that he and Ali hardly ever saw each other, that
she had thrown him out for a while, and that their separation was so
bad at one point that if divorce had not been illegal in Ireland they
would no longer be married.
