Yes, U2 did lose some fans with Achtung Baby. I remember being a bit
jolted with AB myself, because I'd gotten used to the "Save the world"
persona of the band. But that was a terrible constraint on their
creativity, and this was *not* cool. AB became my favorite U2 album
because artistically it's a masterpiece, breaking through all of any
sort of constraint. "Zooropa" and "Pop" are great, too, but they don't
quite match Achtung Baby. Just my opinion, of course.
