On a cold January evening in an unfriendly world, a family unknowingly
says goodbye to a son. In the days to follow, a whirlwind of events
would grip tightly at the heart. Waves of emotion triggered by a phone
call, passed on to an entire community by a few keystrokes.

Please remember to save a thought for Patrick tonight. For those of you
who were reading WIRE one year ago, the emotion which momentarily
brought together a community cannot and should not easily be forgotten.
It took three days for the sad news to hit us, and hit us hard it did,
that a WIREling had lost his life over a few dollars.
For those of you who were not reading WIRE a year ago, you missed a time
when virtual strangers put personal differences aside to share feelings
from the heart. Let's not remember the sadness and pain caused by such
hateful acts which can so easily make their way from the headlines
directly into our own lives. Let's remember the warmth and love
generated by the loss of a friend. Let's remember the great smile which
touched so many of us.

Your memory will always remain with us, Patrick Perez.
