for me...my job SHOULD be secure and this merger shouldnt affect me too much.
For the 2 others that I work with here in Denver it quite possibly could
affect their jobs greatly. No one knows right now what is to come. We have
been updated on suttle changes here and there between both companies and
officially Polygram doesnt exist anymore as a distributor. The name of the new
merged company is Universal. So basically we are keeping Universals name (no
comment on this..I have my own opinions on the name thing..but they messed up
by using Universal--IMHO). Right now if U were to call my "Polygram"
voicemail it would say "Thank U for calling Universal...blah blah blah" So the
changes are taking place slowly but surely.
I have seen a few friends already be let go by labels and its sad and I hope
that they can find something soon. But until Jan 99 we dont know more than
what the papers are printing and everything else is pure speculation and
rumor.
As far as U2 is concerned...a friend of mine whos been in this industry since
the 70's told me that he sat in at a dinner with Interscope and the rumors are
suggesting that U2 will go over to Interscope but that the catalog would still
stay with Island. Island will be merging with another label.
Meaning...all new material that U2 puts out would be on the Interscope label
and anything that U2 has already done would be on Island still. I have also
heard that U2 has been offered QUITE the sum of money to go to Interscope...I
dont have an exact figure but rumors are suggesting in the 50 million dollar
range.
wondering if she gets a discount on alcohol now? :) would be nice!
