Concerning the war in Bosnia... No one wanted people to suffer but just
one tiny mention of involvement and someone would say "Vietnam"...the
memory of being involved in a internal civil war of another country was
just to fresh. People were afraid of another black wall with thousands
of names...and a divided country.
Of course the situations were different(this time around there was no
draft, for instance) but some would not relent. People were afraid of a
repeat performace I guess. I don't think the people of Europe realized
this when they were asking us to get involved...the American public had
to reassured that we would not be involved in an unending undeclared
conflict..and no one could promise that. That's just one of many
reasons why took so long for the government to do something. The
American people had to be convinced that it would be a limited
involvement.
I beleive Bono will stand by his friend. A real friend doesn't cut and
run at the first sign of trouble and I somehow don't see Bono doing
that.
