Well, some old celtic/european languages have other meanings for
it, but in old Irish 'aoidhe' seems to mean 'guest'.
Usually the name turned into
MacHugh or Hughes...that's easily Hew or Hews.
Mac is of course 'son' (of) I think.
Mind you, this is only one way of getting there. I guess there's
loads of other interpretations.
Maybe not important, but interesting! Always had a
weakness for etymology.
