I'm not Bono but I play Bono on TV

Good afternoon Wire,
And a splendid afternoon it is...because at last the weekend is upon us.
Time to break out those beer kegs, unplug those alarm clocks, and crank up
the stereo playing some good old tunes from our favorite Irish band. I
thought I would comment on a few of the threads this week since I've been
fairly busy and haven't gotten to say all the things I would like to.
First off, there's been a lot of talk about drugs, maybe...maybe too
much talk. But this list is not a drugs list...this is a U2 list! And I'm
glad to see that the talk has died down somewhat. But once again, in the
crazy world as Wire you never know what is going to happen next but of
course we had all these Bono impersonators coming from all directions and
now we are on an equally grand thread dealing with why you shouldn't say you
are Bono when you are really Bob from Topeka or whereever.
And last but not least, we have a thread detailing why Wire is
destroying itself or whatever with these "flame wars" as they are so
affectionately called by their pyromaniacal worshippers. Well let me tell
you something, "flame wars" have been going on forever and are not just a
Wire phenomenon. They are legitimate discussions that may or may not be
controversial depending on how salient you view the issue (i.e...Bono on
drugs, favorite/least favorite songs/albums/etc.).
Now I respect the opinions of those who want this list to just be a tool
for them to find bootleg traders or answer their questions or spread news or
whatever, but some people like myself enjoy this list because of the
exchange of ideas and opinions about U2 and U2's music. Sometimes these
discussions become heated and sometimes (like in the Bono on drugs case,
which I enjoyed about as much as everyone else and I frequently said so)
they fill your mailbox with lots of wasted space. But my point is that
these discussions are what Wire is all about. As far as I'm concerned any
U2 fan can get the information they need or the interaction they want here,
and you shouldn't need to go elsewhere. By no means is anyone forcing you
to read every single message or agree with every single opinion. People say
some pretty stupid things on here...but at the same time people make some
brilliant observations as well, and that's why those of you who have had
your fill of "flame wars" and such should take another look. And at the
very least there is the reflector site at
http://www.wildheart.org/archives/wire that you can use and skip over
everything you don't care about or care to read. I encourage you to use it,
I use it all the time...I usually delete the list when I get it in the mail
because I've already read the messages, just like most people on here.
But hey if you like your world sugar-coated, if you like to pretend
there is no controversy, no grey area in between black and white, nothing
beneath the surface, go ahead, just mail a good old unsubscribe to Joel and
we'll see you down that great information superhighway. I've got all I need
right here.
