Let me introduce myself. My name is Matt Savelkoul and I'm a freshman
at Hamline University in Minnesota. I've been lurking on this list now
for about five months. I became a fan of U2's music roughly a year
ago. I was lent the War CD by one of the owners of a coffeeshop I
worked at. I can't thank her enough for getting me into their music
(Thanks again, Lisa!). I started listening to it in the car and
remember thinking it was okay, but one song in particular stuck out in
my mind, "Seconds". I just couldn't get that song out of my head. I
really liked it. I started buying the albums one by one (I remember
disliking Zooropa and October and eventually learning to love them.)
Then I bought all the singles, books, bootlegs, t shirts, videos, and
posters, I could get my hands on. In under four months, I had over
thirty U2 CDs! Since coming to college and having access to a T1/LAN
internet connection, I now have over four hundred U2 MP3's (concerts,
rarities, etc.) on my computer. Lisa's the one who also introduced me
to Wire. My favorite album changes almost daily, but right now it's
Pop. My favorite songs are Dirty Day (Bitter Kiss), Exit (Live), Do You
Feel Loved, and Your Blue Room. My one huge regret is not having become
a fan sooner (U2 came to Minneapolis on October 29 during the Pop Mart
tour.) Fortunately I've managed to see three Pop Mart shows on video,
and have heard about fifteen of their concerts. I can't wait for their
next tour and the chance to hear their music live and firsthand.
U2's music has changed my life. I love their music and probably listen
to at least four hours of it a day. Recently, one of my english
assignments was to write a paper on how something (book, ad, movie)
influences the public discourse. I also gave a presentation on the band
and their political messages (spending four hours editing together a ten
minute video showcasing video and audio clips). A few students came up
to me after the presentation and said I've convinced them to buy one of
their CD's (I recommended the Best Of) and some came up to me and shared
that Pop Mart was the best concert they'd ever been to in their life.
What follows is the final copy of the paper I'm turning in tomorrow.
Midnight is where the day begins,
Matt
P.S. My favorite performance of Discotheque has to be from Sarajevo.
I love it how it sounds like "Boom Chow, Boom Chow, Discotheque," and
I also think the Life During Wartime/Take Your Partner by the Hand combo
is great.
