I found the following article in my hometown newspaper, the Glens Falls,
NY _Post-Star_. The article is a review of seven different box sets /
anthologies coming out in time for the holiday season, and includes a
paragraph about our boys, so I thought I'd post it.

CD Sets: When good things come in small boxes
By Mike Curtin / Special to the Post-Star
<snip>
Like Van Morrison, his countrymen U2 warrant their own box, but for
now, a two-disc set will suffice. Focusing on their pre-techno years,
disc one, "The Best Of 1980-90", chronicles their evolution from a
clamorous, guitar-driven anthemic cult band to clamorous, guitar-driven,
anthemic superstars. Their early years are underrepresented with "I
Will Follow", the only example of a taut, jerky style that in later
years, under the direction of producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois,
became more linear and flowing.
As any collector of their CD singles already knows, U2's vault of
outtakes, abortive projects and remixes is voluminous, and the 15 tracks
that comprise the "B Sides" of the second disc barely scratch the
surface. Among the highlights: a spooky version of Patti Smith's
"Dancing Barefoot".
The CD booklet is full of early photos of an impossibly young
quartet -- among them a 1981 shot of lead singer Bono wearing a T-shirt
from J.B. Scott's, Albany's late, lamented rock club. But behind their
doe-eyed expressions lie a zeal and spirit that would make them among
the biggest-selling aggregations of the '80s.

There you go! Enjoy.
Dream out loud,
amanda
P.S. My boss from a job I had a few years ago actually saw U2 play at
J.B. Scott's back in '81. He said there were only 50 or so people
there. Wish I could have gone, but I was only three (I thought the
world revolved around me, I was wrong... so I sing this song..).
