From Tom Vanderpooten:
I just got back from a break to Ireland and met the guys on
several days last week as they are working on new material
like Edge said.
Also Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno said the band had work to do.
They only started monday 5th october till..., but don't go all flying
to Dublin now, cause probably they stopped now.
On the first day I saw them, I only met Adam and Larry in the evening.
Bono and Edge were still inside but didn't came out.
Somebody driving by put a watch with a pair of scissors on the car
from the Edge and drove off. I told Adam about it, but he was not keen
on touching the stuff. He took it anyway (very carefull, maybe the car
was wired you know) and said we would tell the Edge.
The next day U2 arrived early and Bono stopped to talk to the
fans outside. He was like selling the new greatest hits cd like it's
mindblowing, a hell of a package, if you can put your hand on that...
I asked him to sign my map of Ireland I made myself and he took a
look at it and wrote on it : decapitatated our country man... give me
back my head. That was really cool ! He was also talking about not
forgetting the Amercian fans and always taking care of them...
He also mentioned they are the biggest band in the world with the
worst website.
On the question why they didn't play Bad in the USA, he said something
like Yes we did in euh.... we were still trying to play Staring in the sun.
The next day I bought some cd's I didn't have already and got them
all signed in the evening. I was there with a rented bike and Bono
wrote on my cd : A BICYLE FRom Belgium.
As there were two other girls waiting outside at this time (around
20hrs) he gave the girls a ride into city centre !! I wish I
did not had my bike with me ! Wow Bono once gave me ride !
During the weekend they were not there but on monday
I walked towards the studios with Daniel Lanois. (Hi I'm Dan, yes I
know, I'm Tom.)
At noon the Edge signed my American promo cd Sweetest thing (To Tom)
and then I left to go back home. I know 10 minutes later Bono arrived,
but hey I saw him enough therefore.

(Prarit's note: The article below makes note that U2 recieved
death threats during the R&H tour. To my knowledge, the most
recent publicized concert death threats occurred at the Oregon
POPMart and Belfast POPMart concerts. I have no doubt that
there were death threats at the Dublin concerts, but I have no
published knowledge of them...)
>From CNN:
U2 Brought Northern Ireland Peace Process Back from the Brink
(NOV. 26) WENN/P - U2 BROUGHT NORTHERN IRELAND
PEACE PROCESS BACK FROM THE BRINK From WENN
correspondent RUPERT CORRY in London The Northern Ireland
peace process was close to collapse until rockers U2 saved the day.
Pro-British Nobel Peace Prize winner DAVID TRIMBLE reveals
the delicate truce was under attack from feuding politicians.
An historic referendum to end violence in Northern Ireland also
looked set to fail as not enough young people were going to vote.
This changed when U2 played a crucially important gig on the eve
of the vote earlier this year (98).
Trimble says, "It was extremely helpful to us at that juncture
because we had been going through a rough patch in the
referendum campaign. This caught the headlines and kept the
opposition out of the headlines for two days and was very well
received by younger people."
Trimble gave his support despite U2 being a highly political band
in their earlier days with hits such as SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY.
They were reported to have received death threats after they
denounced terrorism on their RATTLE AND HUM tour in the late
Eighties.
Trimble says, "As for the politics - other than the fact they were
supporting the YES for peace campaign - we didn't talk about it."

An excerpt from British Prime Minister Tony Blair's speech to
the Irish Parliament, Monday, November 25, 1998:
Condensed from The Belfast Telegraph:
"We see a changed Republic of Ireland today: a
modern, open economy; after the long years of
emigration, people beginning to come back for
the quality of life you now offer; a country part of
Europe's mainstream, having made the most of
he European structural funds but no longer
reliant on them; some of the best business
brains in the business world; leaders in popular
culture, U2, the Corrs, Boyzone, Bewitched; a
country that had the courage to elect its first
woman President and liked it so much, you did
it again; and the politics of Northern Ireland
would be better for a few more women in
prominent positions too. "

Omagh lights up for Christmas
By Ciaran McGuigan
BOMB-scarred Omagh takes another step towards normality
today when its Christmas lights are switched on.
Several thousand people were expected on the streets as Daniel
O'Donnell performs the ceremony.
A dazzling array of entertainment was lined up for what promised
to be a poignant but joyous event as the town struggles to put the
August 15 massacre of 29 people behind it.
Sinn Fein chairman of Omagh District Council, Sean Clarke, urged
people to turn out and support the town - and enjoy a spectacular
night's entertainment.
"We are expecting a large crowd, probably thousands if the weather
holds out," he said.
"And it should be a good night. We have lined up some high profile
names and the planned laser show should be spectacular.
"The town has been fairly quiet so far in the run-up to Christmas
but hopefully it will pick up after this."Entertainment gets under way
at 6.30pm when Ireland's Voices for Peace Choir takes the stage,
followed by folk superstar Dolores Keane.
The Omagh Community Youth Choir will sing Across the Bridge of
Hope, the song based on the touching poem written by 12-year-old
bomb victim Shaun McLaughlin.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mo Mowlam joined Frank Sweeny,
a co- ordinator of the Omagh Fund, at last night's London launch of
the fundraising album Across the Bridge of ope, which features U2,
The Corrs, Boyzone and Daniel O'Donnell.
The album will be released on Monday and it also features actor
Liam Neeson reading the poem written by Shaun McLaughlin.
"The bomb was one of those watershed events that we find in
history. It happens and after it happens nothing is the same," said
Mr Sweeny.

>From NME:
DOLORES PROMISES PISS-TAKING ALBUM
THE CRANBERRIES' new album is called 'Promises'
and will be more upbeat than the band's previous efforts,
according to singer DOLORES O'RIORDAN.
Following U2's assertion that their new album will convey a
feeling of "joy", Dolores told MTV last week: "There's a lot
of bizarre material on it. There's a lot of strange
songs. In the early days, when the band started, we
used to have and write more funny, freaky songs. But
by the third album, I think we were too much in the
limelight and we felt too freaked out, so the writing got
a little bit sensible there for a while. Now it's sort of
silly again, with a sense of humour and a little bit of
piss-taking."
The album, which will be released early next year, is
the follow-up to 1996's 'To The Faithful Departed'. It
was recorded in London, Canada and France with
producer BENEDICT FENNER.
The band plan to tour the UK around the time of its
release.
