Well, well, well. . .

<<Interesting to note from both public, but mostly private, replies

to believe that Bono's done it too.>>

And couldn't we say the converse - that those who haven't, want
desperately to believe that he wouldn't, either? That's human nature,
too. . .as it is to want to idolize and then not want to accept anything
one might see as a flaw in the idol.

Oh, and another thing - this isn't meant as a flame towards Patty C. in
any way - but all the "conversations, lunches, and coffees" in the world
do not a drug abuse confidante make. No matter what the band did in the
80's, I'm fairly sure that kind of stuff doesn't go on now, and Bono
isn't Oprah; I doubt he'd be jumping at the bit to talk about past
indiscretions ten years after the fact, during ZooTV, or even the next
day.

Oh - and I've lost the exact passage, but some people were talking about
Bono's "reverse guilt" causing him to do less than healthful things. .
.did that remind anyone else of that argument that Eno and Bono have
over a song (Stay, I think) in Flanagan's book? It's pretty funny. The
conflict is all over semantics, and Bono tries to pull acceptance into
his corner using pity and self-humiliation. . .anyone else see a
pattern? "Odd reverse guilt." C'mon, man. ;) That LV is a more slippery
cat than he's given credit for. ..

Elmo spaketh:
<< if bono was doing lines of coke on
the joshua tree tour, it would explain some of his longer, more
irrelevant stage ramblings.>>

So you're saying that the coke not only stayed in his system up to
today, but was somehow retroactive, coloring all his actions and speech
until '87? In other words. . ."This is. . .I don't know what this is. .
.this is for you". . .The man is excitable and easily distracted. And I
think he was born that way :)

of shooting up heroin, well, you're definitely not going to shoot up
crack, or cocaine, because it's much more addicting and just plain more
dangerous.>>

I'd defend Bono's intelligence to anyone, for any amount of time, but I
know some other VERY smart people who lacked the sense to stay away from
certain substances - even after they'd seen what could happen to
friends, and even themselves. On another level, I know vegans who smoke
and drink. People who run a mile a day and are bulimic.

Now, I'm not trying to say that he ever DID do these drugs. I'm just
saying that if this topic is to be broached (and it is, obviously), it
should be broached realistically, with an eye to the person and the
situation. . .and the most rational decision, I think, is to not decide.
He may have, he may have not, but as it affects none of us personally,
it shouldn't really matter. And yet, it also shouldn't have been outside
the realm of comprehension for anyone. I know few people who can resist
temptation; we all have our "petty" day-to-day temptations. For a rock
star, those stakes are just raised to where the formerly unthinkable
suddenly isn't.

And, finally, doing bad things (and yes, doing lines is in my opinion a
bad thing) does not make one a bad person. In fact, it could make
someone a better person, eventually - if something is learned from the
bad experience. It's like when your dad told you to wash the car when
you were fourteen: "it's a character-building experience."

So. Let's not have the "yes he did"/"no he didn't" back and forth
anymore. . .maybe this could evolve into a discussion of the kind of
pedastals on which we place pop stars and how that reflects on our own
lives?

Maybe not.

At any rate,
Dynne
