Actually, even though I have lukewarm opinions on the rest of this
provocative email, I do agree that the emotions in the Popmart video are
less obvious than the emotions in the Rattle and Hum video. Now I didn't
go to the JT concert (SOB!) but I did go to Popmart. That doesn't really
affect my opinion though, because I interpreted the comment to be
regarding the emotions apparent in the video. My impression is that
Popmart was more about a show/performance (esp with the screen, costumes),
and JT/R&H was more about heart-on-sleeve vulnerability that the band was
expressing so readily in the 80s. I can imagine it would be emotionally
debilitating for Bono to keep up that level of raw, bare, honest intensity
for 10 more years. I'm not saying he doesn't still feel this inside and
I'm sure he wants to get the most out of every performance, and evoke
those same feelings in the fans. I just think he (and the band) goes
about it in a different way. I, too, was terribly choked up by Edge's
SBS. And parts of R&H make my heart race and toes curl (my first exposure
to "Bad"). But really, R&H and Popmart were dramatically different "films"
(if you will) and had different objectives/purposes imo. Criticizing one
as better or worse than the other seems pointless to me.

Tanya
