Next would be Zooropa. from its high altitude
start to the middle section w/ those watery
Edge guitar bursts. I love the use of advert
slogans, and then......BAM, the tune really
takes off. Same frantic and desperate picture
as Acrobat, guitar churning(kinda like Streets?)
and that fucking lyric, "Its cold outside, but
brightly lit", perfect slogan for the NEW U2.
In '95 we got HMTMKMKM. Perfect timing cause
I was going through a HUGE Bowie and T.Rex
phase, and this song IS glam rock. Big nasty
guitar riffs, drums and bass from space and
Bono singing about stardom like a star. It stomps
along until the 3 electrics give way to an
acoustic at the bridge, and it works. May be
their most ass-kicking song ever.
Pop has a few songs that floor me(Please,DYFL,
LNOE) but after hearing Gone a few times it was
no contest. This tune could have fit on AB or
Zooropa or UF for that matter. Again a great band
performance,Adam and Larry have never had so much
movement in a rock song. Then the lead and rhythm
guitars complement each other to perfection the sparse
open chord rhythm, along side Edge playing w/ pedals
to get that 747 sound. Bono's vocals are flawless, and
as personal as they get. Perfect song played loud, and
may even top Bad as their best ever.
There are loads of others, but these stand out
in my mind. Even if the next album is a flop,
it will have 3-4 perfect U2 songs on it which
is better than most bands best album. If they
do split we'll still have 10 albums and loads of
other tunes from 20 years of recording. The Beatles
& Zeppelin still sound awesome in my book, and so
will U2.
Rock On
