Image does not always come from the person themselves, it is most
often the representation by the media that creates someones "image". In
the 80's (later 80's anyway) the media was getting a bit wary of Bono's
honesty. It was labeled pretentious and holier-than-thou...so for anyone
who was not a fan of U2 Bono was exactly that...preachy, pretentious and
self-righteous. Whether or not(I tend toward not, but Im slightly biased
lol) thats who Bono actually was is beside the point.
Bono said it himself...during the 80's he was playing god. Now I took
that to mean not that Bono wanted to be/thought he was/wanted to be
represented as god, but that thats the persona the media thrust upon him
and for better or worse he was stuck with it. Everyones heard the joke
that goes something like this (majorly paraphrased) "Sting beat out Bono
for the 'Most Pretentious Person With One Name' award" (and I think
thats kinda funny actually lol)...

MacPhisto (IMHO) is Bono saying "You think I was pretentious before?
Look at me now Baby! I'm the Devil himself!" (hehe those were probably
not his *exact* thoughts) Theres a whole bunch of issues surrounding
MacPhisto...but that's essentially where I think its comming from.

Thats what I interperate 'The Fly' as being. Bono The Rock Star. Lol I
wasn't a fan at the time to notice but it must have shocked the hell out
of people used to Bono The Anything-But-Rock Star.
