Streets, Streets and more Streets

Hi all-

Haven't posted for a long while, but with all of this "Streets" talk - I was
reminded of something I posted sometime last year. Since there are so many
new folks around I thought I would search the archives and repost it. Hope
y'all don't mind...

I have often wondered about this as well. There are two songs that will
always be extra special to me - Streets and Bullet. Now let me explain
why...

Streets - I traveled with 5 friends to the 12/19 and 12/20/87 Tempe shows.
At this time in my life I was 22 and relatively poor. In order to afford
the cost of transportation, hotel, etc. I worked 120+ hour weeks the 6 weeks

prior to the shows. Before the 12/19 show I spent about $200 on t-shirts
that I was going to give to my friends and family for Christmas gifts.
Being that this was a U2 concert, I did not have much concern that the
shirts would be stolen if I set them underneath the bench I was sitting on.
So finally the band starts to play Streets, I am so excited, I jump up and
down and realize that I am jumping on my purse. So, I go to move it and
much to my surprise my T shirts are missing. Also, missing were the
oh-so-friendly folks who were sitting behind us prior to the show. These
oh-so-friendly folks NEVER returned to their seats so I am 99.9% sure that
these are the people who took my stuff. Anyway, to say the least I was
extremely upset. However, I was not going to let that ruin my time and I
was able to really enjoy the concert. This all leads up to why this song is
so special - the next night as soon as the band started the intro to Streets

my friends presented me with a stack of T shirts. They all had pitched in
and bought more shirts for me. I was overwhelmed at their generosity... I
still am today.

Bullet - Same shows, same friends. During Bullet, when Bono sings,
"...slapping em down, 100, 200" one friend, Cherie, kept on going with "300"

while Bono did not. It got quite a laugh in our section. The next day she
went to buy film and she said, "They have 100, 200..." and the rest us
yelled "300!" Needless to say, the storekeeper thought we were crazy.
Cherie was teased mercilessly for the next year, probably would still be
teased today if she were alive. Tragically, my roommate, my cherished friend

was killed one year later. During the indoor leg of the Zoo shows (at the
LA Sports Arena) when Bono sang this he turned around to the back of the
stage (which is where I was sitting) and sang "100, 200, 300". I almost
freaked because it was if he were looking directly at me (I was close to the

stage). The friend I was with (who was also at the Arizona shows) said,
"That was from Cherie. You should feel comfort everytime you hear that
song." And I do. Can't listen to that song without cracking a smile.

Back to lurking mode...
Elizabeth
