In 1993, (god, I was in high school back then - yikes!), a weatherguy that I
worked with at a local TV station gave me a bootleg copy of U2's performance
from Live Aid. I grew up in a really strict, Pentecostal background, etc.
(Even went to Jimmy Swaggart's for junior high - I know, that explains
everything.) Did not even really know who U2 was, to be honest. So I go home,
pop in this CD, and the first song was Bad. Can't even explain it, to this
day, how powerful that song was the first time I heard it. Simply Incredible.
I was hooked.
The next day, I went out and bought Achtung Baby, and nothing really hit me
except for "So Cruel". The first time I listened to it, I was on my way to my
senior english class at 7:30 in the morning. I remember it like it was
yesterday. The words, the music, just left me in awe. Some times words can
not express how we feel about something. This is how I have always felt about
"So Cruel", and still do to this day. I'm a fan for life now.
What song did it for you? What did you think when you first heard it?
Best,
Brad Grantham
