The Rolling Stone bashing - Everybody who bitched about Alanis being on the
cover, check out the new one with Will Smith on the cover. It has a nice
little interview with The Edge in which he goes through various tracks on the
Best Of and tells what they mean to him. Much better than some overblown
promotional article like Alanis Morrisette got, if you ask me. It's nice to
hear from The Edge without some journalist cutting in. See, U2 was not
forgotten.
The Planned 1999 releases - I don't know, as phenomenal as they are, I don't
think U2 will put out all the stuff that they are "supposed" to next year.
Passengers 2 in spring, a new album in Summer, and another Best Of in winter?
I don't see them doing more than one of those projects for next year. In
fact, if there is to be a Best Of put out next Christmas, it poses an
interesting question for the band. If there is a new album next summer, how
do you relate it to the Best Of? You couldn't make a Best Of 1990-2000
without tracks from an album that came out in 1999. And while the new album
would certainly sell well, what about those who don't buy it because they can
wait 3 months and get a cd that has all the radio-friendly hits the album
might yield?
What do I think they should do? Not that it matters, but I say go ahead with
Passengers in 1999, it seems to be a smart move. I think Passengers helped
make POP an excellent album, and that it would be good for the band to do some
more experimentation, since their new direction is up in the air(I personnaly
PRAY that they don't "return to their early sound"). If Passengers is
released, that wouldn't interfere with a Best Of, seeing as though it wouldn't
cause a U2 market flood. Then, in 2000, put out a new album. Go head to head
with other "supergroups" like Oasis(who claim to be working on what will be
the first great album of the new millenium) and rasie the stakes.
Do I think this will happen? No. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the
only U2 release next year was a Best Of. It's no secret that U2 get slower in
the studio each time they enter. Oh well, no big deal. I'd love a new album
and tour next year, but I think we all survived 1994-1996 with just Zoo TV
Live From Sydney, HMTMKMK, and Passengers. What ever it takes to settle
things out now will certainly be worth the wait.
Well, heres hoping that they keep up the good work, which, after all, is the
only thing that matters. Take it easy everybody. As O(+> (Prince) would say,
"Peace and b wild."
