NC-17: Mental Nudity and Innuendo

Dear Wire readers,

The following are revised and/or expanded comments I made to a
fellow Wireling earlier today. She encouraged me to send this to Wire
(Thanks, Vanessa!). The views within are HIGHLY SPECULATIVE and, thus,
should be taken with a grain, if not a shaker, of salt. (Followed
quickly by a wedge of lime and a tequila shot.)

I was just thinking about that 3 album deal with Polygram recently.
The first album was this "Best Of", the third will be their new studio
album (tentatively entitled "Drive", if the rumor is correct), the
second album I'm really at a loss as to what to expect. I have
difficulty with the idea of a "Best Of, Vol. 2" because unlike the first
GH, not enough time has elapsed (1980-1990 vs. 1991-1997/98). Also, The
Edge himself in recent interviews that not enough time has passed to
include the "POP" material in such an album. I think, and I have
absolutely no idea if I'm correct, that the next CD('s) will be a "Best
Of - Live 1980-1990". There are a few things going for this prediction.
U2 have never released a full-fledged live album ("Under a Blood Red
Sky" and "Wide Awake in America" being mini-albums, the latter is only
half-live at that; "Rattle and Hum", of course, is half-studio,
half-live). This would fix a glaring and obvious omission in their
catalogue. I, for one, being a fan of long standing, would welcome such
a release. As Mr. Mullen said during the POPMart tour, "Live is where we
live." This has been, is now, and always will be true. They could
release it as a 2 or 3-CD set, with one of the discs being a
limited-time release, perhaps with live non-album tracks (if they feel
like playing the same game as they are now); heck, the bonus CD (if they
decide to pursue this route) could even be the b-sides they didn't
include on the present B-Sides disc.
This kind of release (i.e., a live release), IMHO, is the likeliest
course, but U2 have definitely surprised me in the past before (with the
most recent surprise being the current "Best Of" compilation).

Well, what do you all think? (I apologize for the full frontal
nudity of my speculative nature.) But, you know, I've shown many of my
"speculations" to Rashas (another Wire contributor/subscriber), and she
hasn't gotten a restraining order yet! I must be doing something right!
In closing, I'll quote Bono:

And you can swallow or you can spit;
you can throw it up or choke on it.
......
And I must be an acrobat
to talk like this and act like that.
