I *believe* Polygram used the term Limited Edition to indicate that
the sets were going to be pressed ONCE and retailers would be able to
order them only ONCE -- in that way the sets were limited.
I've talked to a few retailers here in Cow-town and they (as well as
Nico) told me the the orders were based on the relatively poor sales of
U2's POP (Man, am I gonna get flamed for that...)
Then when the sets sold out in less than a week -- and no more were
to be found, well, guess what...Polygram steps in and changes it's
mind. So the 2CD set is not "Strictly Limited" (as the posters say),
but they're now "Sort Of Once Were Strictly Limited" :)
Let's face it -- this is the result of two things.
1) Record stores not having a clue as to what the deal was behind this
album. I've talked to stores employees who were under the
distinct impression that they were going to be able to re-order the
sets in. I find it hard to believe that Polygram just suddenly made
this announcement about re-issuing the CD when EVERYONE was saying
things like "We'll see how the first week's sales go -- and then we'll
order more in..."
(Prarit recalls telephoning one place and them denying U2 was even
releasing a Best Of...)
2) People buying multiple copies of the album. I know that there is
no way to control this but...I saw people in line with ten copies :)
(I wasn't one of them -- I admit, however, I did buy two...I hope to
trade it away one day for a CD goodie :) )
It doesn't shock me at all that Polygram, a "large multi-national
corporation lied," as you put it :o), but what does shock me is the
relatively low number of copies that were available...
