Greetings Wire,
It's been a long time and a change of e-mail addresses, but I'm back in
the flock, and what with a "new" U2 album to entice us, I thought I would
make myself heard. I personally don't see the whole controversy with U2
releasing a greatest hits album. I think it says a lot about this band that
it takes one of these collections just to sum up their first ten years, not
to say anything about the incredible work they've done since 1990. What
impressed me were some of the songs on the B-sides disc that i hadn't yet
heard. Now we all know that B-sides can sometimes be our favorite songs
(Lady with the spinning head has been my favorite now for quite awhile). I
really like some of these tunes...particularly Hallelujah Here She Comes and
A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel. Most of the other stuff I had already
heard. And as for the best of disc itself, I thought the songs were well
chosen and arranged in an order that makes the collection really great to
listen to. I popped the CD in my stereo last night after getting back from
the store and instantly found myself transported back ten years...the songs
were still fresh and even though I'm a total U2 fanatic I was just really
appreciating what these guys have done. Now I know the Greatest hits album
may not have every single song that every single one of us wanted on there,
if so you could probably package it as a boxed set and call it "The Complete
U2:1980-1990" (not a bad idea...I hope Bono or the Edge is reading this--we
need A Celebration on CD!!). I just hope everyone can share in my
reflection that while The Best of U2:1980-1990 is in no way a definitive
statement of the group's musical accomplishments of the 1980s, it is a well
crafted and well thought out musical work that still deserves many listens.
