I don't own the WOWY single (never been able to find it), but I had LT on a
very badly taped mix a friend made for me of U2 B-sides. I was addicted
from the moment I heard it, and then, of course I ruined it by mistakenly
pressing "record" while I was listening to it for the millionth time in a
row one day. After that, it sounded even less recognizable than it had b/c
of how it had been originally copied, and I couldn't handle listening to it
anymore.
That was probably more information than anyone needed, and you can all
probably guess where I'm going with this. I got my Greatest Hits
yesterday, and Oh my God! Finally, LT as it was meant to be heard. There
are some songs that just render me speechless, y'know? I don't even want
to think about why I like it; I don't want it deconstructed; it's just
beautiful. "Hooooold on to love!" Sigh. This collection of B-sides is a
wondrous thing, no?
Also...
I LOVE U2!!!!
OK, I know, duh. See, I think the placing of the songs on the double CD is
perfect, and more than anything, the fact that "Trash,Trampoline, and the
Party Girl" is the final song. It made me think that U2 always have the
last laugh. When I first heard they were releasing this CD, I was kind of
upset, because I thought releasing a greatest-hits CD was a very
self-conscious thing to do, and I hadn't expected it of the band. But the
fact that they put a recording which, while I love it, is undeniably a
strained performance, at the very end of the set indicates to me that U2
still has a sense of humor about their status as a supergroup in rock
history. It also sort of reinforces to me the unfinished nature of their
quest to make music, which is reassuring, 'cause I don't want this to end
anytime soon...
I hope some of this made sense, and I hope you all enjoy listening to your
Limited Edition Greatest Hits...I know I am!
