My WIRE History

Summer of '96
Somewhere in Dublin, 4 men whom I have no idea exist are wanedering
the streets, thinking of music, and above all are anticipating, if not
already going to the studio. It's been 3 years since they took the stage as
a band, a year since their last album, which btw was not officially one of
theirs but rather an experimental album. Regardless, their looking forward
to breaking back into the public eye again.
Meanwhile in St. Catharines, Ontario a young man of 16 is taking on
the responsibility of coaching a pee wee baseball team along with his
brother. It's about a 20 min drive to the diamond, and along the way, his
brother is listening to a radio station that he notices plays the one song
that catches his ear. It's played often, yet never seems to say who it is.
He remembers the chorus, and approaches a friend. "How's it go Matt?" he
asks, to which Matt replies "In the name of love, what more in the name of
love." "Oh, that's U2."
U2? Oh, I've heard of them. Didn't their lead-guy swear at the
grammy's or something? Oh, and didn't they do that song "Hold Me, Thrill
Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me"? I HATE that song, but I like this "In the Name of
love" one. Oh, it's called Pride? Okay, Where can I get it? I go to the
record store, and find that it's on an album called Rattle & Hum. I pick it
up, and I'm dismayed to hear that it's a live version, which I don't like
(that changed) and I put it aside. Later that same-said friend introduces
me to something called Achtung Baby. I can't seem to stop listening to that
album. I loved it!
I picked up a few albums along the way, and managed to find a single
called "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses". Then, one fateful day, I met a
fellow U2 fan (and Wireling) Will Thiessen. I play drums and was referred
to a Youth pastor at Will's church about playing with them a few times.
During the "soundcheck" this guitarist guy, whom I recognize from school,
starts playing this riff that sounds familiar. I listen, and discover that
it's "Wire".
He and I get together for some jamming and he tells me about this
mailing list called "Wire". I try it out. To be honest, I wasn't
impressed, but I stayed on it just for a bit. Well, I'm glad I did.
Through Wire, I've managed to buy, or make trades for the following:

continues, and I owe it all to Wire. Thanks to anyone who's reading this,
and if you've done a deal w/ me that I haven't mentioned, I'm sorry, and

amazing fan base like us.
