the POPiness of Sweetest Thing 98 (positive comments from non-U2 fans)

I met up with some old college friends. One of them is a hardcore
Mariah Carey fan and he listens to R&B and soul music. Forgive my
political incorrectness, but he listens to "black" music, meaning
those stuff that always make the Billboard No.1, like Boys To Men,
Puff Daddy, R. Kelly, blah blah blah.

Anyway, he told me that he hated himself because he just can't stop
humming Sweetest Thing because the song is so darn "poppy." He likes
the song. Now we're talking of a Mariah fan who has crossed the line
to like U2. This is quite rare.

Also, my former roommate isn't that big a U2 fan but he rode my car a
few times with me palying my tape with the old Sweetest Thing quite
long ago. Anyway, he prefers the new version over the old. Why? Ic
an't understand this and I'd totally disagree but he says that his
favorite part is the "doo doo doos" in the end. His type of music are
that of super mainstream bands such as BarNaked Ladies, Deep Blue
Something, Blues Travellers, and the like.

So I guess as U2 fans, a lot of U2 may have preferred the original
version of Sweetest Thing which was more "stripped down" and a more
pwerful bono voice. But I guess U2 must have gotten something right
as they seem to be attracting more fans who are not U2. I don't think
their remake of Sweetest Thing will make them have one less die-hard,
loyal fan to leave them anyway.

Cheers,

J
