I was talking to a couple of Wire readers today, and I offered to
start a new thread in honor of our band's releases on Nov. 3rd. They
haven't gotten back to me yet, but, since I'm not lacking in confidence,
I can continue without their timely approbation. I propose a "Top 10 U2
non-album tracks", i.e., any U2 songs NOT on: Boy, October, War, The
Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby,
Zooropa, and POP. I would like for the lists to exclude live versions
and remixes of released tracks (however, remixes of unreleased tracks
would be fine); I think those would be better on other future lists
(consider this a "Preview of Coming Attractions"). Notice "Wide Awake In
America" is not on the off-limits list, but stick to the studio songs,
please. I'm doing this in honor of the "B-Sides" disc coming out with
the "Best Of".
My list of "Top 10 U2 Non-Album Tracks" is:
10) Johnny Swallow
9) Salome
8) Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad
7) Holy Joe (Garage Mix)
6) Love Comes Tumbling
5) Slow Dancing (either version)
4) Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
3) Lady with the Spinning Head (extended dance mix)
2) POP MUSIK (POP Mart mix)
1) Sweetest Thing (original version)
This thread may have been done before, but I didn't see it. Oh,
another thing...I tried to limit myself songs that were obtainable
commercially right now through Island Records. I did this so that the U2
Ultrafan who owns every note that the band has ever played wouldn't
flaunt the fact that 98-100% of their expendable income goes to
authorized and unauthorized recordings of the band. I think this path
would devolve into a "my collection is better than your collection"
argument, and then we would get into the sensitive "money" issue which
polluted our beatiful Internet magazine over the last couple of weeks.
So, if you have the unplugged, folk-dance version of "Wake Up Dead Man"
from the "Achtung Baby" sessions with Depeche Mode, the Cure, and David
Bowie on backing vocals, I'm very happy for you. Just don't put it on
the list, please. Start another one!

P.S. Just in case I have some U2 completists in a cold sweat, to the
best of my knowledge, such a version does not exist. But, I could be
wrong.
