I remember reading about Clinton's meeting with U2 during his first
campaign, in 1992. My take on the situation was that America was looking
for someone to believe in, even while we were as cynical as hell about
politicians It was sort of a paradoxical situation. To some, Clinton
sounded idealistic and fresh while George Bush looked like he was out of
gas. That appealed to people who are naturally idealistic themselves. I
should know, I'm naturally idealistic!! :-) Bono is a very intelligent
person, but he's a natural idealist, too. Sure, Clinton is a politician
with his fair share of skeletons in his closet--and someone opened his
closet!! :-) But right after he was elected, there was a sort of
euphoria and high hopes atmosphere in the U.S. Many threw these hopes in
the nearest trash receptacle when crud started to happen and Clinton was
an albatross to Democratic candidates for Congress in '94. But it seems
like there are still people out there who agree with Jesse Jackson's
motto: "Keep hope alive". I don't want to write a column on American
politics on a U2 mailing list, but I did feel like a few comments on
American attitudes toward politics and politicians in the '90's by an
American was called for. But God knows, all of this is strictly my
opinion and might not be worth a damn.
Pax,
Patricia
