Not only has U2 introduced me to many of the artists that you have
listed in your letter, but it has really opened my ears to the Irish
music scene in general. It was through her connection to U2 that I fell
in love with the voice of Sinead O'Connor...but I've also picked up a
taste for some of the more traditional irish music through the
compilations both U2 and Sinead have been part of, and the elements of
the traditional irish music that both drop into their music (Steve
Wickham's electric fiddle for example!). This in turn, led me to a
growing appreciation of the traditional artists from my home, Cape
Breton...which has a number of Celtic bands...So it took me a while, and
fifteen years of listening to Irish music to finally appreciate my
roots. Thank you U2 for that!
Now it has come full circle, and one local band in Halifax, "Big Fish",
a celtic outfit does many a U2 cover song, while pumping up the
traditional elements of the songs. This has in turn, led me to listen
to the early material (i.e. The Joshua Tree and before) with a new
appreciation for U2's work.
later.
