U2's defining moment

Hey WIRE

I really like this thread Matt has put on WIRE. I think I would vote for a
choice that he does not include... The making of the Red Rocks video.

If you recall, this was a critical point in the history of U2. Paul
McGuiness and the band were hoping the WAR tour would firmly establish U2 as
a major new player on the rock scene. This hadn't been accomplished after
the BOY & October tours.

The idea of making a live concert video to capture the band's energy and
unique style had been discussed for a while. You are well aware that
funding was a problem and the band decided to fund most of the video
themselves...going for broke so to speak. When they were confronted w/ the
terrible weather at Red Rocks, the video was nearly scrapped, but they
decided to go ahead and record the show. We know now it was a hit,
critically and financially

The release of the video in conjuction w/ the live LP UABRS in my opinion
gave U2 that transformation they had so long been seeking. UABRS is one of
the biggest selling concert videos of all time. It gave U2 critical
attention that kept them alive on the rock scene until the release of UF. I
honestly believe the video is the defining moment of U2.

Any thoughts???? Here is how I would rank Matt's choices.

1. Live Aid
2. Release of the Joshua Tree
3. Release/Debut of Achtung Baby/Zoo TV
4. Meeting Paul McGuinness
5. Signing with Island Records

BTW - Hi Maggie & Gina
