That's another good one that should be added to any list of the most
significant days/events in U2's career. You could also add the moment when
"One" finally clicked during the Berlin sessions. The band has gone so far
as to say they may not be together now if they hadn't gotten that song
down, and used that to get through the difficult recording of the AB
 album.

That's true ... but what about the opposite question: how far would U2
really have been able to go with another manager? Would another manager
have negotiated and allowed the unique financial arrangement that exists
in the band, where everyone gets an equal share of the pie? The band has
said this arrangement has been instrumental to their success.

I also don't think you can undersell the day they signed with Island.
Would another label have given U2 the artistic freedom Chris Blackwell (et
al) gave them? Without such freedom at the start, would they be where they
are now?

And a couple people emailed me to say Live Aid was the most significant
day of their career. That's the day the world learned who U2 was. That set
the stage for the anticipation of the Amnesty Tour. Together, those two
set the stage for Joshua Tree to be as huge as it was. Live Aid is the day
I realized I had to share my band with the rest of the world.

Thanks to Maria and the others for the comments so far. Looking forward to
hearing more! Like I said, I think you can make good arguments for all of
these and more.

Matt
