POP Tour Programme Wins ICAD Award Adworld Website
Gold was a scarce commodity at the 1998 ICADS - the
annual best of Irish advertising and design awards
organised by the Institute of Creative Advertising &
Design. Only two of the 100 nominated entries across
a wide range of advertising and creative work warranted
the sought-after gold status, proof positive that when
creatives judge their own work, high standards are
rigourously applied.
The Gold Awards went to McConnells Advertising and
DesignWorks for a radio script (Radio- Up to 30 secs.
category) and a poster (Advertising Print Crafts
Category) respectively. McConnells Gold Bell was for a
Jacobs Fig Roll - Dustin Solo radio commercial, while
DesignWorks scored for an Abbey Theatre poster for
"The Wake".
Nine Silver Bells were awarded and here again
McConnells were to the fore with a Telecom Internet
colour press ad featuring John Rocha taking Silver. The
photographer on the ad, Trevor Hart, also won a Silver
Bell.
Two Silver Bells went to Des O'Meara & Partnership for
a B/W press magazine ad for Insectazap - "Fly" and a
98FM radio commercial - "Response".
Imagenow (Identity Programme for Irish Design
Institute); Creative Inputs (corporate brochure for ESB
Environmental Review) and Averill Brophy (Pop Tour
Programme) carried off Silver Bells for design.
In the Interactive Media category, X Communications
won a Silver Bell for The Chogonka Scroll.

Condensed from the Boston Globe:
Last May, after he held aloft the hands of John Hume and David Trimble
during a Belfast concert to support the political settlement in Northern
Ireland, U2 lead singer Bono stood off to the side of the stage and
regarded the two politicians with a wide grin.
''Those boys,'' he mused, indicating Hume and Trimble with his thumb,
''should win the Nobel Prize.''
Bono got his wish yesterday when Hume, the visionary Catholic pacifist
who
was the prime architect of the peace process, and Trimble, the one-time
hard-liner who led a wary Protestant community to compromise with Irish
nationalists, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Former Chilean dictator General Augusto Pinochet has been
arrested in London, England.
You can read about it at: http://www.cnn.com.
Some of you might know that Bono gave an extremely impassioned

Disappeared" and requested that Pinochet tell them where "The

BONO SALUTES NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER
By Dan McGinn for ZooNation.com
U2 lead singer Bono tonight paid generous tribute to Northern Irish
nationalist leader, human rights campaigner and tireless advocate of
peace in Ireland, John Hume who was announced along with Ulster
Unionist leader David Trimble as the 1998 winners of the Nobel Peace
Prize.
Speaking on Ireland's premier chat show `The Late Late Show' on RTE
elevision, Bono paid tribute to the Derryman who was being interviewed
on the Dublin chat show by Gay Byrne, claiming Hume had "the heart of a
poet - not a politician".
"I tend to think John as being more like a poet. He has the heart of
a poet - not a politician.
"He has the real ability to look at a situation not in the face but in
the heart. He gets to the heart of the problem.
"You know, I remember him being in our kitchen at home talking about
how the only way to solve the conflict in this island was to tackle
the problem of our divided people".
Speaking by phone from a recording studio in Dublin where he
was watching Hume being interviewed, Bono extended
U2's congratulations to the nationalist leader and his fellow
Nobel prizewinner and advocate of peace in Northern
Ireland, First Minister David Trimble.
A clearly emotional Hume thanked Bono as the U2 lead singer
affectionately recalled how the band had "played support to
John and David Trimble" in Belfast at a peace rally during the
May referendum on the historic Good Friday Peace Accord.
Fellow Nobel laureate, the winner of the 1995 prize for
literature, Seamus Heaney (who like Hume attended St Columb's
College in Derry as a teenager) also paid tribute to the SDLP
leader agreeing with Bono that John Hume had the heart
of a poet.
"You know Bono is right about him having the heart of a poet.
He has shaped a new language in politics in Northern Ireland,"
the award winning Irish poet told the Late Late Show audience
by phone from Harvard.
Hume was celarly moved when a fellow architect of the Irish
peace process, Gerry Adams rang from Media in Delaware to
congratulate him on the show.
The Sinn Fein leader, who was also rumoured to be in line for
the Nobel award for persuading the IRA to lay down its
weapons and enter the democratic process but was not cited
by the Norwegian committee for the peace prize, told his
former political rival that this was an enodrsement of his tireless
efforts for peace in Ireland.

Trimble, Hume Share Nobel Prize and Stake in Belfast Agreement
AP 16-OCT-98
BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) -- David Trimble and John Hume
have little in common besides a commitment to making April's
peace agreement for Northern Ireland work -- and now, of course,
the Nobel Peace Prize.
Though their own personal relationship is frosty and formal at
best, Hume and Trimble pulled off a pleasing double act during
May's campaign to win public ratification of the peace accord.
Their improbable appearance in business shirts and ties beside
U2 singer Bono provided the emotional highlight for their
successful "say yes" campaign, which achieved 71 percent
support.
(Prarit's note: The article continues on with histories of Hume and
Trimble.)
