GH (a reference to what Bono said on a similar occasion)

Hi Wire!
I've been silently watching the GH-selling-out-credibility discussion
going on and it brought a piece from "U2 At The End Of The World" up
in my mind. Sorry I can't look it up right now, but I read this book
like 4 or 5 times :) and I think I remember fairly well how it goes.
So, somewhere in the middle of the book Bono and I think Bill Flanagan
are talking about Kurt Cobain once having said that Nirvana would
never play stadiums (b/c that would be selling out, in their
opinion)--and of course they did play stadiums pretty soon. Bono said
he asked Kurt why they did it and Kurt answered: "I changed my mind".
Bono then said that Sinead O'Connor has the same ability -- to say one
thing today and then say smth completely the opposite tomorrow, and
they are both absolutely sincere in both cases. (He also added that
Eddie Vedder was more honest than that :)). In another place of the
book, talking about Sinead and this ability of hers :), he added:
"That [her sincerity] is what makes her a valuable artist".
So look at it this way: U2 did say they would never put out a greatest
hits album, but now they do--so what does it mean? IMHO, it just means
they CHANGED THEIR MINDS!!!! ;))) And that's one of the things that
make them valuable artists!!! ;) B/c only idiots never change their
opinions about things! (Please don't flame me b/c of this one saying
you've always stuck to what you said! No, I will not assume you're an
idiot, I'll assume you're lying b/c nobody can do that ;)!!)
Ever changing,
Irina.
