First of all, fuck is a lot more intimate that kiss. Fucking implies
a total self-commitment by offering you whole self to another. It is
almost like a Biblical two-becoming-one connotation. Almost all
figures of speech use fuck to connote merging and linking and unifying.
Kiss on the other hand is just external, and temporary. Kiss isn't as
deep as fuck (no pun intended). Kiss can simply mean a friendly kiss
or a French kiss, or even a flying kiss.
Thus, Bono wants to look at the future with guarded optimsm when he
kisses the future, but to the past, he gives total self-commitment and
total embracing of the past. The past is what made them what they are
and nothing can change that, but the future is still up for grabs.
Thus, the union one has with his past is more certain and more
intimate than that with his future.
