While DVD has a higher sampling rate, our ears max out(depending on age)
between 15000 and just over 20000 hz so 48000hz isn't going to make a
substantive difference.
As far as the CD to DVD audio comparison, people forget that DVD and
thus Dolby digital uses 'lossy compression' in a compromise to squeeze
video and audio on the disc. It's all about money and they jumped the
gun since lossless audio compression will be standard for the next gen
CD and DVD audio only player but DVD video will continue to emply 'lossy
compression' better known as 'Dolby Digital.'
As far as DVD players, there are some real duds. Safe bet would be some
of the newer Panasonic models.
Snowy picture, Rattle and Hum looks great on regular VHS, no lossy
compression, vid tape audio specs are near DAT quality, on a Sony
Trintron with a JVC VCR, pic is quite sharp. DVD is overated.
