Bono smoking angle overated/ST 98

Bono strained his vocals for a number of reasons, improper breathing,
lack of vocal rest pre and post concert, lack of liquids during
shows,... so I agree the smoking angle is overated.
The other point is that vocals chords calcify with age while the upper
registers aren't in the same range.

Getting a bit tired of exaggerated generalizations of the screaming
being the only weapon in his earlier arsenal, there were alot more
redeeming qualities in his vocals and delivery. Even a sore throated
80's 'Sweetest Thing' blows away the ultra tame ST '98 version.
I realize Bono's vocals are more brittle but it seems everything they
play nowadays gets the slowdown treatment and occasional falsetto
overkill. Way too passive, is Bono afraid to attack a song vocally, a
little more bite and tempo.
