Bono Vocals Done on Purpose?

After reading numerous complaints on the various U2
mailing lists about how people do NOT like
Bono's vocals on "The Sweetest Thing '98" and
how they feel his voice is worse, I came across a
thought (that one cell brain of mine was working hard):

What if Bono *purposely* sang the remake this way?

After all, why bother doing a remake of a song if
the vocals are essentially the same? Note how
dramatically the vocal differences are between
the two versions of "Tomorrow".

It's easy to say Bono's voice is worse, but is
this really true? His performance on songs like
"Gone" suggest otherwise. Furthermore, I heard
numerous people say that in certain shows
Bono's vocals were just as powerful as when he
was 19. Clearly this shows that Bono *can* sing
this way if he wants. But had he sang the
remake of "The Sweetest Thing" as he did in '87,
then this partially defeats the purpose of a remake Bono's
vocals, IMO, are the biggest difference (along with
the "do-do's" at the end).

Just a one-celled brain thought...

Ciao,

John
