The "mix it or nix it" discussion......

THIS is a debate that I am thrilled to have (what's with this faggot v.
fagget thing.....sheeesh!)

I want to address John Hlavaty and John DiRezze's comments about how I said
that U2 are not "cool" anymore.

First, I wish to say that I SO much want you guys to be right. I guess I
just don't want to be self-deluding because I am such a huge fan of U2. In
the end, it doesn't affect my "fan-ness" (not fanaticism :-)) over this
band.

Let me also say that I may need to eat my words. Mix it or Nix it was on
again last night (Thursday) and they were challenged by Bruce Hornsby's new
song (I forget the name)...well, of course, U2 won by a vote of 83%.
However, with that said, I mean, it is Bruce Hornsby - indeed, a talented
singer, but let's face it, he's now played on adult contemporary and easy
listening stations.....Morisette's is certainly a stronger challenge to the
band.

Now, both of you pointed out that Morisette is very popular these days,
which she is (and Canadian, so I guess I should be proud of that, being a
Canuck myself). But I was also certain to point out in my original e-mail
that I voted MANY times, and I think it is like U2 fans to, ahem, shall we
say "stuff the ballot box" as it were for our band. SO, in winning at 53%,
I suspect that there is a strong possibility that they may have lost if it
had not been for fans like myself....if I may take such credit.

By the way, this may not mean too much in the end anyway. I think that if
the Rolling Stones put out a new song, it too would probably have beaten
Morisette as a result of the (older) fans who do what I did and call many
times to vote. Its kind of like how the Republicans win because Republicans
tend to vote more...but, ah....I digress into other touchy subjects....

I guess its just that I am old enough to remember being in high school when
high school students (who really decide what is popular) were wearing all
those Joshua Tree shirts, when it was cool to listen to U2, when they
identified with them as a band. It doesn't happen anymore and it is sad.

Anyway, for the rest of you wirelings, I don't hear "mix it or nix it" very
much, so I am not sure if it on every week day...but for those in Toronto,
its on at 8:00pm. From 8 till 9 you vote and the number to call is
416-872-4636, then press "9". If you hear that the challenger is someone
OTHER than Bruce Hornsby, you know that a new vote is on (or just listen to
the radio if you are in the city...) Just hit the number they tell you to
hit to vote. Let's keep them playing in Toronto till they have to be
retired!!!

Enjoy your weekend,

Rob Knetsch
