I got this theory that U2 deemed Sweetest Thing 1987 as
"incomplete" because Edge wasn't in it. After all, there are no new
lyrics or even melodies to the 1998 version except for a little chage
int he chord arrangements. The most prominent difference is that Edge
has a nice guitar addition and he now sings the background to the
chorus "oohhh Woaohhh the sweetest thing."

The 1987 version had Bono singing what Edge sings now, and it
hardly had any guitars. The possible instument Edge played there was
the simplistic piano, but hey Bono or Lilywhite could have easily
played that. But I am not saying there is anything wrong witht hat.
After all, we do know that Adam wasn't in the studio when they
recorded 40 and that is why Edge is the one who plays bass for that
song live because he created the bass lines.

For me, this is the only possible reason why the band said Sweetest
Thing 87 was not finished. Good thing they finished it now, and
Edge's guitars sound really reallyg great! A perfect compliment to
the song!
