Lou Reed rocks the White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In front of portraits of George and Martha
Washington and a roomful of formally attired VIPs, punk elder
statesman Lou Reed rocked the White House Wednesday night.

Hillary Rodham Clinton and Vice President Al Gore were among
those spotted moving to the music at a state dinner for Czech
President Vaclav Havel and his wife Dagmar.

It was Havel's idea to have Reed appear as the entertainer for the
dinner held in the White House East Room.

Said President Clinton: ``If you had as much fun as I did just now,
you should give President Havel the credit because he said, 'I want
Lou Reed to play tonight.'''

The evening provided a welcome respite for a White House shaken
by a continuing sex scandal.

The Brooklyn-born Reed and his band played some of his classics,
including ``Sweet Jane.''

After Reed played several songs, the Clintons and Havels appeared
on stage with him and Havel had Reed sign a book of his songs
that was recently published in Prague.

>From Gina Griffin :

The magazine is called "Drum!", and yes its for drummers. Page 28
has an ad for what appears to be a product called Paiste, and it
features a GROOVY shot of our own Lardence, looking
appeallingly pensive. Its the August/september issue, and the
price on front was listed as $3.50 US.

>From a Japanese reader, Nitzy:

'With or without you' is going to be used as an
image song of the Japanese TV drama series which is going to
be broadcasted from this coming October.

The story of that drama is said to be a kind of mystery (dealing with
stoking?) and that stars the actor/singer who's very popular
among the young girls (or even the ex-girls?)

TV staffs intended to use the song as the theme song but
the permission was not given.

The reaction about this tie-up within the Japanese fans is horrible.
TV drama producers tend to use European/American popular songs
very easily or thoughtlessly these days, and the fans are
wondering why U2 finally gave the permission of using the song.

Single CD 'With or without you' (c/w Sweetest Thing) will be released
on 28th Oct. (3"CD Japanese original package. which is very popular
format in Japan. Hurry up, collectors!!)

>From MTV news:

More details have emerged about the new U2 retrospective, "U2
The Best of 1980-1990," due out on November 3, including plans to
release a new single from a re-tooled B-side.

The group recently headed back into the studio with producer Steve
Lillywhite to enhance the old track, "Sweetest Thing," by adding new
vocals and instrumentation. The song was originally recorded as part
of sessions for "The Joshua Tree," but was relegated to the flip
side of the "Where the Streets Have No Name" single when "Thing"
couldn't be completed in time to make the album.

U2 plans to release the revamped version of "Sweetest Thing" as a
new single on September 29.

As we previously reported (see "U2 Signs Pricey Deal For Best Of
Albums") the new 14-track record is the first in a pair of "greatest
hits"
albums from the band. "U2 The Best of 1980-1990" will be available
at a reduced cost its first week in stores as a limited edition
double-CD, in which it will be packaged with a 15-track compilation
of other B-sides taken from the U2's '80s singles.

------------
>From today's LA Times:

With two greatest-hits packages in the works, U2 is looking to the
production team behind "The Unforgettable Fire," "The Joshua Tree" and
"Achtung, Baby"--its biggest and most acclaimed albums--to join again
for the
Irish band's next new recording. Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois are in
Dublin to
discuss possibly collaborating on a new project, though no recording or

>From ZooNation:

Details of U2 Greatest Hits Tracks
By Doug Martin For ZooNation

Along with new details released yesterday by Island about U2's
first foray into Greatest Hits'dom comes some exclusive info
from a source close to the band.

ZooNation sources also say the band has decided to release a
live version of Bad on the greatest hits release instead of the
studio version. The version they are currently leaning to is the one
off of the Rattle and Hum video, which has never made it to an
album.

Sunday Bloody Sunday will be the studio version off of War and
not a live version.

The Sweetest Thing's new version will appear only on the Best
of U2 Album, the B-Side compilation will feature the original
recording released in 1987.

The B-side compilation will feature all B-sides from the Joshua
Tree and many from Rattle and Hum.

The band is debating on whether to release songs like Treasure
and/or Boy/Girl.

Pride will be the studio version, just to clear that up, as will I Still
Haven't Found What Im Looking For. It was decided the gospel
version would remain on Rattle & Hum, especially due to the
original's continuing popularity amongst U2 fans

Our source also says "I really think it is a wise move. For one,
Sweetest Thing being released for radio play is genius, this thing
could and should top a radio stations playlist and will help with
sales".

"This album is hardly a Greatest Hits set, its more of a compilation
of U2 fan favorites". He Continues "Bad was never a hit, neither
was Unforgettable Fire, When Love Comes to Town, etc".

Lastly, This album could be a great primer for the new U2 album.
The new Album is targeted for completion in the first part of July
'99, and the "in-studio" or working title is said to be 'Drive'.

Unconfirmed reports have said one track that has been mixed,
it's been called "From the Cradle to the Cross", at least that is
what it was written up as. The band has scheduled studio time
at the end of the month, but whether they will go full scale into it
is yet to be seen.

All of this information is being denied from official (Sourceable)
sources at PM and Island Records at this time.
