U2 Plans Bonus With Greatest-Hits Set

The first-ever greatest-hits set from U2 will be packaged with a
limited-edition bonus disc that will be pulled from store shelves one
week after its global release. In a worldwide exclusive, Billboard
Online has learned that the album -- one of three
forthcoming best-of discs from the Irish band -- will be
titled "The Best Of U2 1980-90" and be released by
Island Records in two forms. According to Rob Partridge
of Coalition, the band's U.K. publicity firm, the first
version of the album will street Nov. 2 worldwide (Nov. 3
in the U.S.) and will be bundled with a bonus disc of
previously released B-sides; a week later, that package
will be removed and replaced with the regular edition,
which will not contain the second disc.

"The Best Of U2 1980-90" will feature the tracks "Pride
(In The Name Of Love)," "New Year's Day," "With Or
Without You," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "I Still Haven't
Found What I'm Looking For," "Bad," "Where The Streets
Have No Name," "I Will Follow," "Unforgettable Fire,"
"Desire," "Angel Of Harlem," "When Love Comes To
Town," "The Sweetest Thing," "All I Want Is You," and
"October." In the U.K., the set will be preceded Oct. 19
with a new version of "The Sweetest Thing"; it is
unknown at press time if the single will also be released
in the U.S.

Although London's Financial Times reported that U2
received more than $50 million in advances for the
three-album, best-of deal, Partridge would not confirm the
amount, claiming that all monetary figures are "completely
speculative."

Further details are expected to surface today.

This is the second article from ATN, and contains a short
quote that people arguing about the Best Of package should
read:

"Real U2 fans will probably already have all the songs that would
be on it," said Mark Anthony, the pop/rock buyer for a Chicago Tower
Records outlet. "But it will be good for people who only own a couple
of albums."

The poll question for the last few weeks was "Do you want to see
a Best of U2 album released?"

342 voted NO.

In a small article of the September/October issue of Traveler
magazine, about the tourist friendly Dublin, U2 is mentioned as early
patrons of the now trendy nightlife mecca of the Temple Bar
neighborhood. "Originally a raffish quarter where U2 played music and
Sinead O'Connor waited tables, it now bulges with hip boutiques,
galleries, clubs, and young day-trippers."

Clinton Booked By Bono

The Prez meets U2.

What a life. When U2 isn't busy meeting with US President Bill Clinton,
they're signing deals to make themselves bazillionaires. U2 met with
President Clinton and his wife last week during the President's historic
trip to Ireland in the US Ambassador's residence in Phoenix Park on
Friday (Sept. 4), just before Clinton left Dublin. The BBC didn't report
what was discussed during the tete a tete, but knowing Bono, there
likely was some political agenda.

The President did tell reporters aboard Air Force One that, during their
visit, U2 had presented him with a book about the history of Ireland's
capital city. Clinton said he'd keep the new book alongside a book Bono
gave him in 1995 by William Butler Yeats, Clinton's fave Irish writer.
Bono humbly inscribed that book with the words, "This guy wrote some
good lines, too." U2's association with Clinton goes back to 1992, when
the band supported him in his successful run against George Bush.
After meeting with the President, members of U2 whipped out their pens
and affixed their John Hancocks to a $50 million deal with PolyGram for
three "best of" albums, with the first being released November 2, right
in time for holiday gift giving. Imaginatively titled The Best of U2,
Volume One, 1980-1990 the initial disc will contain fifteen tracks from
U2's earliest years. A set of U2 B-sides from the 80s will also be made
available for your purchasing pleasure.

Marc Marot, Managing Director of U2's label Island, told the BBC, "This
is an enormous opportunity for retailers to make a fortune." To say
nothing of U2's fortunes. Other musicians, such as Madonna and Janet
Jackson, have signed deals worth more than $50 million; however, those
contracts were for new material, not previously recorded songs.
In their approximately 20-year recording career, U2 has released ten
albums and sold more than 87 million records world wide.

U2 signs $50 million deal for greatest hits discs

By Erich Boehm

LONDON (Variety) - Rock group U2, which underwhelmed the
music industry with its last album, "Pop," has struck a $50 million
deal with Polygram for three "best of" albums.

The deal is unique in that while other veteran acts such as
R.E.M., Madonnaand Janet Jackson have made hefty deals in
the recent past, their contracts were for new material.

The first of the U2 releases, with the working title "The Best Of U2
Volume One 1980-1990," is due out Nov. 2. It will be accompanied
by a separate release featuring B-sides. The two may also be
combined into a limited-edition double release.

Polygram, parent of U2's Island Records label, is currently
being acquired by Seagram for $10.4 billion. Under U2 manager
Paul McGuinness' deal, the lion's share of the $50 million is believed
payable to U2 immediately, meaning Polygram, under Philips'
control, will pay. By the time the albums are released, however,
Seagram should be in the driver's seat.

U2 has sold more than 87 million records worldwide. The "best
of" album featuring post-1990 material may hit the shops as early
as Christmas 1999. U2's "Pop," which took the band into techno
territory, sold relatively disappointingly in the U.S. upon its early
1997 release.

Belgium, U2's Bono has been asked to contribute a track. The
Track, "Estonia" is from their 1997 Album "The Strange Engine".

Achtung Baby! U2's greatest hits on the way

Island is to release U2s first best of album this autumn following
intensive high-level negotiations between PolyGram and the
bands representatives.

The first album, provisionally entitled The Best Of U2 Volume
One 1980-1990, will contain around 15 tracks, and will be
accompanied by a separate B-sides set. The latter may appear as
part of a limited edition double package or as a separate release.

Several weeks of discussions involving PolyGram UK chairman/ ceo
John Kennedy, U2 manager Paul McGuinness and their lawyer Allen
Grubman were finally concluded last Thursday, paving the way for the
release of two new albums on November 2.

"This is an enormous opportunity for retailers to make a fortune,"
says Island managing director Marc Marot. He adds that volume
two will probably follow either next Christmas or the year after.

U2 are likely to have gained significant sweeteners from PolyGram
to release the album since their Island contract contains no provision
for a best of.

"Were all very happy with the agreement, says McGuinness, who
admits the initial request for the album was "kind of a surprise".

(Prarit's note: Please be aware that I am extremely uncomfortable
in putting this type of material up on my page for one reason -- I'm
not like some other crazed fans out there who think it appropriate to
chase down Bono, The Edge, Larry M., or Adam C., no matter what
they are doing, who they are with, etc.. It's a serious invasion of
privacy. I'm only including these pictures here for the sake of
completeness on this page. NO COUNTER LINK WILL BE ADDED
TO THESE PICS. I don't care if you look at them either -- I'm just
making my position on this material clear before anyone attempts
to accuse me of trying to generate hits for my page...

I was once talking with another uber-fan who mentioned how she
had climbed over a fence and into Bono's estate in Dublin and dug
through his garbage. Hello? Could someone pass me the
stupid-stick? [Uhm...some of you may have heard me re-tell
that quaint little story, so you know who she is...])

For U2, Christmas has come early, with the Irish band having
reportedly signed a $50million deal to bring out three compilation
albums. Such a massive pay-out is far from unheard of in the music
world, with stars such as Madonna and Janet Jackson having in the
past bagged contracts that big - but those deals were for new songs,
not previously recorded material. The first of the three "Best of ..."
albums - featuring material from U2's 10 previous albums which
have sold over 87 million copies worldwide in the band's 20-year
history - will be released by Polydor in time for Christmas, according
