There are a few things I would like to point out. And forgive me if someone
has done it already, but I would like to do it again.
First point of order. U2 Under a Blood Red Sky -- LIVE. Compilation of
several U2 concerts from the UABRS Tour (for those of you who thought it was
all Red Rocks -- turn the CD case over and read the back cover). At that
time, the songs were (and still are) U2's greatest hits. They were just
sneaky and didn't list a nifty title like GH Live. Probably on Paul
McGuinness' doing -- he's a very smart man. (not sure on that last comment --
don't quote me please -- the doing part, not the smart part -- he is very
smart).
The tour and album are from 1983 (and covered 3 albums worth of U2ey
goodness). I was just curious. Those of you who stated you would not buy the
next GH CD, do you have this one?
Second point of order. U2 Rattle and Hum. Compilation of several live
greatest hits, b-sides, and new releases (live shows from the Joshua Tree
Tour). The live songs on this album cover 2 U2 albums, 3 cover songs (SSB), 8
new songs, 1 new duet, and 1 song that U2 didn't even perform. So now they
have this really creative new album that blends the old and the new. Critics
would call this album a flop. The movie too. We all know that critics are
doomed to live their after life in purgatory. This album, although not a
greatest hits in entirety, came out in 1988 only 8 years after Boy.
Again I ask. Do you have this one too? I bet you doooo!
Third and last point of order. U2 singles galore. When was the last time you
looked at a U2 discography? I know of life time criminals who have smaller
rap sheets. Just exactly how many singles of Discotheque did U2 release, not
to mention how many different remixes of the same? Import, schimport -- blah
blah blah ... all that means is you pay $6-9 more for something released first
somewhere else. Same thing with Please, Staring at the Sun, Last Night on
Earth ... the list goes on and on. And the AB singles are the same. It can't
be because there is such high demand for U2 dance mixes, or could it? Raise
your hand if you have more than one version of a single, and more than 3
versions of that single's remix. (Raising mine!) They have allowed/hired
these DJ's to come in and make a new sound and in some cases a new song. It's
a U2 hit (according to the good little U2 doo-bees like us), being done and
redone, and released and re-released. Kinda like a greatest hit -- no? But
we all have them.
I still cannot comprehend why some of you are so scared of the "greatest hits"
label. It's not too terrible when you look back and realize, no matter how
many times Bono says "Fuck the past, Kiss the future," that this is NOT the
first time U2 has put out a "greatest hits" record. They are very creative,
talented men. Men who trust each others instinct. Men who don't seem to get
enough credit from some of you who constantly bitch and moan when you hear the
GH word. If it sucks, it sucks, but I know you are gonna buy it. I can't be
the only person here who has the "if it's got a U or a 2 on it -- then I must
have it" attitude.
A greatest hits album at this point is timely. Forget that it is conveniently
due out just before the holidays. Which, BTW, I think is great! Now I can
get that extra bootleg, and let my husband buy the Video and CD for me as a
present. (I knew he was good for something -- Hehehe.) U2 now has 3 albums
that can be combined into one. It's a Wonderful Life! Isn't it?
Not bad for someone who is "mentally challenged" huh?
In the name of Sparky!
