I honestly do not understand why some people think U2 "sold out". Of
course they changed. Life is change, and art reflects life and reality
and dreams. I mean, heck, there was quite a difference between the
Beatles' "Love Me Do" and "Revolution #9", right? Some Dylan fans went
ballistic when he started to use electric rather than acoustic guitars.
(Mind you, I don't remember this, but I've read about it about a
gazillion times) Some fans of various acts really resist changes in
somebody's music, and this pisses me off. In the case of U2, well,
dammit, they are artists, not politicians or big shots in the Vatican.
When you're an artist, you want to express yourself. That's exactly what
U2 is doing. Egads, what's the fuss? It's not like they've compromised
their convictions, because they have not. If they'd said to heck with
Amnesty International and War Child, this would be a legitimate
complaint. But they haven't done this. Why can't Bono write love song
lyrics? What on earth is wrong with this? That would be terribly
stifling. Is what's on their stages going to dictate the quality of
their performances? Of course not. Hey, I ain't complaining.

Pax,
Patricia
